Community First: Strengthening Clarendon’s Public Health and Sanitation
We were honoured to host an engaging Local Governance and Community Development Forum at Serenity Resource Connector, where we welcomed Councillor Winston Maragh, Chairman of Public Health and Sanitation, and CEO Rowhan Blake from the Clarendon Municipal Corporation.
Together, we explored real challenges and innovative solutions for strengthening Clarendon’s public health and sanitation, with a strong focus on community-driven action.
Public health and sanitation aren’t just government responsibilities – they belong to all of us. Throughout the forum, we were reminded that real change happens when communities come together, take ownership of their spaces, and support each other in building a healthier, cleaner Clarendon.

Why Clarendon’s Public Health and Sanitation Matters
Clarendon’s public health landscape is directly shaped by community involvement. Citizens were reminded that reporting illegal dumping and unsanitary practices isn't just helpful – it's essential.
Take action: If you spot illegal dumping, snap a photo of the vehicle's license plate and share it via WhatsApp (876-582-1352) or through the Clarendon Municipal Corporation’s official email.
Stay involved: Youth clubs, citizens' associations, and community groups are encouraged to "police" their areas.
"Sanitation isn't just a government job. It's a shared responsibility."
Clarendon’s Vision for Better Public Health and Sanitation
Councillor Winston Maragh and CEO Rowhan Blake shared their dynamic vision for advancing Clarendon public health and sanitation:
Boost Garbage Collection: Advocating for more garbage trucks and a return to scheduled collections.
Modernise Public Health Laws: Updating outdated regulations.
Strengthen Water Supply: Upgrades for minor water systems are in motion.
Community Clean-Up Competitions: Initiatives to inspire pride and responsibility.
Tackling the Tough Issues in Clarendon
Several ongoing challenges were discussed openly:
Illegal dumping and burning remain widespread.
Property taxes are crucial – they fund sanitation services, yet compliance remains low.
Street vending and waste management are being addressed with improved urban planning.
Drain cleaning is scheduled bi-annually, especially ahead of hurricane season.
Sustainability at the Heart of Clarendon’s Public Health Strategy
Small actions at home can create a big impact:
Separate food waste: Use it for composting and support backyard farming.
Support recycling: Plans are underway for a local recycling centre and an improved waste disposal site.
Reducing household waste eases pressure on public sanitation systems and builds a culture of environmental care.
Future Developments to Enhance Clarendon’s Public Health and Sanitation
Exciting projects on the horizon include:
New Modern Cemetery: Plans are progressing.
Public Abattoirs: For improved food safety and public health.
Improved Transport Centres: To manage urban congestion.
Enhanced Community Engagement: Through upgraded communication channels and more town hall meetings.
"A thriving parish with a healthy, educated, and creative population living in safe, attractive communities."
