Back to School Live Forum Series – Recap

Just three weeks before the start of the new school year, Serenity Resource Connector (SRC) hosted an inspiring instalment of our Back to School Live Forum Series.

Hosted by Clevena Brown, the session carried the theme “Level Up: Student Leadership, School Readiness, and Personal Growth” – a rallying cry for young people to step into the new academic year with confidence, discipline, and the right tools to succeed.

Our panel of outstanding student leaders – Brian Anderson (National Secondary Students’ Council), Nasha Patterson (Jamaica Prefects' Association), and Natalia Burton (Jamaica Union of Tertiary Students) – shared practical strategies and authentic experiences that resonated with students from secondary school to university.

Leadership Beyond the Title

Leadership is far more than a badge or post – it’s service, responsibility, and influence.

- Brian spoke of the unseen sacrifices and behind-the-scenes work that leadership demands.

- Nasha emphasised the importance of being an advocate for peers rather than simply enforcing rules.

- Natalia urged young leaders to balance responsibilities by treating leadership roles like a course – with scheduled time and boundaries.

Readiness: More Than Just School Supplies

The panel encouraged students to prepare mentally, emotionally, and practically:

- Nasha: Positive mindset, organisational tools, and clear personal boundaries.

- Brian: Willingness to learn, early syllabus review, and essential supplies.

- Natalia: Digital tools like Notion or Google Calendar, realistic budgeting, and a supportive network.

Academic Hustle & Financial Savvy

- Guard your GPA from day one – it opens doors to scholarships and reduces financial stress.

- Seek out scholarships and grants early by connecting with community leaders and exploring local opportunities.

- Consider side hustles such as jewellery-making or digital design to build income and skills.

Avoiding Burnout & Growing Personally

- Choose class schedules that match your energy peaks.

- View leadership as a growth opportunity rather than an extra burden.

- Share personal challenges with peers to inspire connection and empathy.

- Remember: discipline outlasts motivation.

Skills for Life After Graduation

The leaders highlighted must-have skills for the future:

- Communication & teamwork

- Project & time management

- Digital literacy (e.g. Canva, ChatGPT)

- Networking & personal branding via LinkedIn and beyond

Final Words to Live By

- Define success on your own terms.

- Balance commitments so one activity refreshes you for another.

- Stay focused on what matters, and let go of distractions.
